Learning to Pray

“If a man would learn to pray, let him go to sea.” That was certainly my experience as a new Christian in the spring of 1986. Shortly after midnight, a Nor’easter slammed into our fifty-foot yacht off Cape Hatteras while sailing to Newport, Rhode Island. It had been smooth sailing the first three days out of Fort Lauderdale, but the waves were quickly whipped up to over 20 feet by winds gusting above 60 knots. Yet, despite the raging sea, howling wind, and freezing temperature, I will never forget the peace I experienced abiding in Christ during that storm. “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3) Since then, I have been learning to abide in Jesus not only through the storms, but through the lulls of everyday life as well.

Keep on abiding,

Steve
